HISTORY
Suburbs has a proud history of cricketing success, built through the achievements of generations of players, teams, volunteers, and administrators.
Our Honours Board recognises those who have represented the club with distinction, achieved excellence on the field, and gone on to higher honours.
LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS
1937
Blockhouse Bay Cricket Club was formed in 1937, initially entering one team in Auckland competitions under the banner of the City & Suburban Cricket Association
1945
October 1945, members of the Suburbs Rugby and Oakley Cricket Clubs form Suburbs Cricket Club.
Walker Park in Point Chevalier was to be Suburbs' first home ground, followed by Avondale Racecourse for three years then Rosebank Domain (Now known as Eastdale Reserve)
1952
In the 1952-53 season the Auckland Cricket Association introduced the district scheme. This resulted in Suburbs best players playing in the Western Districts First and Second Grade teams.
The First Grade side won the competition three times in the first seven seasons finished second three times and third once. This was the first Golden Age for Suburbs Cricket - albeit playing under the banner of Western Districts.
1960
Blockhouse Bay Cricket Club amalgamated with fellow City & Suburban Cricket Association club Ponsonby.
Following the merger, Blockhouse Bay went on to field a senior team in the top grade for several seasons.
LATE 60'S
Blockhouse Bay Cricket Club merged again, this time with the New Lynn Cricket Club, who also played in the City & Suburban Competition.
New Lynn only had one team, but did however have a good home ground at Rewa Park (later to be named Ken Maunder Park)
1967
In the 1967-68 season the Auckland Cricket Association disestablished the District Scheme and reverted back to the traditional club structure, with Suburbs first grade team coming second in the new club-based First Grade Competition.
1969
1969-70 was a great season with Suburbs finally winning the First Grade Competition, 11 years after last enjoying such success as Western Districts in 1958-59.
1972
One club had the players, one club had the ground.
During the winter of 1972 the committees of Suburbs Cricket Club and Blockhouse Bay-New Lynn agreed to merge and Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club was registered as an incorporated society.
FORMATION - 1970'S
EARLY 70S
Afternoon Youth grade cricket was introduced by ACA, with Suburbs having one side in each of the U14, U16 & U18 grades.
Championship wins included the U14 side which stayed together for another four years to win the U17 Tournament in 1978.
This was the start of a proud tradition of Youth Cricket at the club which carries on today.
1975
Ken Maunder Park officially opened for Senior cricket with a match between a Presidents XI and a Suburbs New Lynn XI
Two weeks later a Gala Day featuring a match between a Fred Trueman XI vs SNLCC XI saw a crowd of 2500 attend on the day.
1975
In the 1975/76 season the club developed a Women's section for the first time, with both a Senior & Senior Reserve teams entered.
1978
The upstairs lounge of the clubrooms was formally opened to members
the golden era - 1980's
1980-81
The Premier Side, led by John Reid won the Premier Championship. The first by the Suburbs New Lynn as a merged club.
1984-85
The Premier side won the Two Day Championship, the One Day Championship and the Grosvenor Cup. Youth sides won the U18 Premier & U16 Premier Championships & the ASB Colts Tournament. Two other senior grade teams won their competitions and the Club won the overall Club Championship for the first time.
